Mestrado Profissional em Economia Concentrado

O curso de Mestrado Profissional em Economia na modalidade Concentrado (MPEC) abrange os mesmos objetivos e conteúdo programático da versão tradicional do MPE. Porém, ao concentrar o período letivo presencial em algumas semanas do ano, proporciona a oportunidade de obter a formação do MPE sem ter que frequentar a Escola de Economia de São Paulo todas as semanas. Portanto, é ideal para profissionais que se localizam fora da região metropolitana de São Paulo e que buscam aprimorar seu ferramental analítico e quantitativo, sem abandonar suas atividades no mercado onde atua.

MPEC se diferencia da versão tradicional pela distribuição das aulas das disciplinas em períodos intensivos, mas com programação de estudos dirigidos e apoio acadêmico durante todo o período de 2 anos do curso, incluindo o desenvolvimento e apresentação da dissertação de mestrado.

ABOUT
THE COURSE
The Professional Master’s in Economics and Finance (MPE) is a master’s course run by the Fundação Getulio Vargas Sao Paulo School of Economics (FGV EESP). It is authorized by the Brazilian Education Ministry’s graduate education support agency, CAPES.

It is designed for professionals who seek to acquire or enhance academic knowledge of research, theories, tools and other instruments to apply in their personal and/or professional life, without abandoning their activities in the market they work in.

The course also opens the doors for the development of new careers (higher education instructors, for example) and the possibility to continue studying after the master’s, to do other more advanced courses, whether short or long, such as an academic or professional doctorate.

MPE has various areas of focus, giving students a wide array of options to specialize or diversify their education, in line with their personal or professional interests.

The course has the following main distinctive advantages:

Maximum score awarded by CAPES since 2007, as a result of the excellent academic and professional output of the course’s professors and students;

Wide range of different areas of focus and subjects to specialize in;

Exclusive higher education teaching course for master’s alumni to become professors;

Option to take FGV EESP’s Professional Doctorate in Economics and Finance after completing the master’s, using credits;

Study subjects at other FGV sites in Brazil;

OBJECTIVE
OBJECTIVE OF COURSE
To provide market professionals with a solid analytical and quantitative background in areas of focus related to economics or finance. The approach to theoretical topics is rigorous and it concentrates on study of the conceptual foundations needed to understand, discuss and solve problems that professionals face in their respective areas of activity.

Thus, the course meets the current and future needs of these professionals in the labor market, in terms of both study and contact with professors who are experienced in academia and the professional market.

Diferentemente do mestrado acadêmico, o MPE, além proporcionar sólida formação teórica, dá ênfase nas aplicações dessas teorias para a compreensão da realidade brasileira. Por esse motivo, é o curso mais indicado para aqueles que desejam aprimorar sua capacidade analítica e que não pretendam, necessariamente, seguir uma carreira acadêmica, muito embora o curso os habilite para tal.

Curriculum

Criteria for evaluating the education and learning process

Students will be evaluated in each subject, and they will be given a grade between 0 and 10. Students will pass if they get a score of at least 6.0 (six) in each subject. The average grade across all subjects required to pass the course is 6.0 (six).

Students who attend less than 75% (seventy-five percent) of the classes will be failed, not including absences applicable to the Exceptional Study Regime provided for in Executive Order 1,044 of October 21, 1969 and Law 6,202 of April 17, 1975. The maximum absence rate of 25% (twenty-five percent) encompasses absences due to weddings, bereavement and other impediments specified in law (military service, elections, court summonses, blood donations, paternity leave, etc.) Students who fail the same subject more than twice or in up to three subject during the course will be removed from the course.

The master’s thesis, which is the course’s final paper, will address finance and/or economic topics aimed at real problems at companies, organizations in general or in society, or the development of theoretical models that can be applied and tested empirically in future. Students will be guided by MPE professors, and the thesis may be written in Portuguese, English or Spanish. Foreign-language works must contain key words and a chapter written in Portuguese, summarizing their content. The theses are judged by a committee designated by the Course Coordinator, made up of three (3) or four (4) members, one of whom must be from outside FGV EESP, as follows:

• Orienting professor;
• Professor from EESP or outside EESP;
• Professor outside EESP.

The theses are considered a pass, fail or conditional pass by the examining committee. If they are not submitted by the specified deadline or they are failed by the examining committee, the students in question are automatically removed from the course.

The Professional Master’s in Economics (MPE) lasts at least two teaching semesters and no more than five teaching semesters (including a possible break of one semester).

Admission Requirements

1. Undergraduate course diploma recognized by competent authorities;

2. Pass selection process, which encompasses:

Analysis of resume;
Letter of motivation;
Analysis of English tests, critical thinking and quantitative reasoning;
Interview.

Selection takes place in three phases. In the first one, the documents, resume and letter of motivation are analyzed, to check whether candidates have the profile desired for the course. In the second phase, the test results are analyzed, and an interview is then held (in the third phase). Final approval will depend on the results obtained by each candidate in the three phases of the selection process.
